We don't think like psychologists. And in doing so, we sell ourselves short. Here are six ways to change that:

Obtaining a small-business loan can be a lengthy and exhaustive process, but when your business is brand new, it can be even more of a challenge. Due to the unproven nature of your business, most lenders will look to your personal credit history and your work history in order to help them make a determination.
KSAs - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - a list of special qualifications and personal attributes that you need to have for a particular job. These are the unique requirements that the hiring agency wants to find in the person selected to fill a particular job.
A primary purpose of KSAs is to measure those qualities that will set one candidate apart from the others. In federal personnel guidance, KSAs are defined as the factors that identify the better candidates from a group of persons basically qualified for a position.
One of the factors in your job search is failure to beat the Applicant Tracking System (ATS).
By definition, an ATS is a “software application that enables the electronic handling of recruitment needs.” Although the definition is vague and simply sounds like a management system for applications, an ATS also has the ability to scan incoming resumes for keywords/phrases that are set by the employer. Many corporations utilize an ATS as a pre-determinant of whether or not you’re the right candidate for the position, based on what you’ve included in your resume.
Have you ever described yourself on your resume or in your cover letter as a “hard worker” with a “positive attitude” who is able to “learn quickly?” Let me guess—did your job application seem to disappear into the HR black hole? I can’t say I’m surprised.
In other words, don’t sell yourself short by just throwing in flat, overused words to describe your soft skills. Show them off in a more concrete way, and I guarantee you’ll have more success. |
